Free Casting Instruction
During the warmer months and when daylight savings time is in effect (May through October), casting instruction is available before our monthly club meetings. Starting with the May meeting and continuing each month through the October meeting, free casting instruction will be provided at the Heather Farm Pond next to our Club meeting site.
Our expert casting instructor staff will once again be at the pond no later than 6 PM on meeting nights which will give you at least an hour of quality casting practice before the monthly meeting starts. If you are new to the sport or forget your rod that day, there will always be plenty of loaner rods and reels available. Please plan to join me.

- Students should bring the following gear:
- Glasses (clear and sun), jacket (including rain gear), sun screen, water, lunch & drinks, pen and note card to take notes
- Distance Casting:
- 7-9 wt. Rod w/WF floating line (clean & dress the line)
- 6 wt. Rod is okay but not ideal
- Shooting Heads:
- 7-9 wt. Rod (can be the same rod as above)
- Separate Reel or Spool w/Shooting Head, Running Line and Backing
- Shooting heads are often 1 or 2 wts. heavier than the rod wt.
- Note: A running line is not the same as backing
- Running lines (a popular brand is Amnesia) are usually sinking or have an intermediate sink rate
- Special Delivery Techniques for Bass & Other Tough Fishing Situations:
- 7-9 wt. rod preferably with a bass taper WF floating line
- A bass taper has an exaggerated WF taper to turn over heavy, wind resistant bass flies
- You can use the same rod as the Distance Casting Rod
- Bring a bass fly to practice with (e.g., deer hair popper, Dahlberg diver, etc.)
- Leaders: Rig all lines with short 6-8 foot bass-type leaders (i.e., stiff butt section w/15-20# tippet section), use yarn flies except for the bass line
