Fly Tying Instructions: Cro Fly

TYPE: Streamer
SIMULATES: Threadfin Shad/Baitfish
HABITAT: Fresh & Saltwater
DESIGNED TO TAKE: Striped Bass, Largemouth Bass
BACKGROUND: Originated by Dave Cox of Mohave, Ariz. Vary size, colors and materials. For saltwater, tie a green wing with green peacock herl topping.
MATERIALS:
Hook: Size 8 Mustad #7948A TDE Bronzed
Thread: Size "A" Black or Tangerine Colored
Body: Medium Diameter Ginger Chenille
Head: Tying Thread
Hackle: Light or Dark Ginger Saddle Hackle
Overbody Strip: Small Diameter Black Chenille
Weighting: 2-Amp Fuse Wire
INSTRUCTIONS:
  1. Hone point, flatten barb. Leave head space; wrap to bend. Tie in pinch of hackle barbs for tail; thread underwrap once to spread barbs. Starting at tail, wrap fuse wire 8 turns forward; secure. Tie in 1 inch length black chenille atop base of tail.

  2. Trim barbs from both sides saddle hackle butt. Tie butt atop chenille at tail. Starting at head space, tie 3 inch minimum length ginger chenille along top of wire wraps.

  3. Secure chenille at tail with 2 wraps, then double back toward eye atop chenille base. Wrap thread forward and secure chenille at head space. Return thread to tail. Double chenille back to tail; secure, then return thread to head space.

  4. Grasp saddle hackle and ginger chenille; wrap together to form body (Joe Kimsey variation improves durability). Tie off at head space; trim excess. Use dubbing needle to pick out wrapped down barbs.

  5. Bring black chenille forward atop body. Tie off, clip excess. Form head, whip finish, cement.
