Fly Tying Instructions: Maggie Fly

TYPE: Dry fly
SIMULATES: Caddis fly Adult (Order Trichoptera)
HABITAT: Freshwater Streams
DESIGNED TO TAKE: Trout
BACKGROUND: Originated by the late Ted Fay, Dunsmuir, California. Time tested table fare for the browns and bows in the Upper Sacramento and McCloud Rivers from the first of July through the last of October. Featured pattern in October 1985 issue of "Fly Ideas," Western Outdoors Magazine, courtesy Joe Kimsey, Ted Fay Fly Shop, Dunsmuir.
MATERIALS:
Hook: Size 8 Mustad #7948A TDE bronzed
Thread: Size 8/0 Flat Nylon, "Tangerine" Color
Body: Coats & Clark 100% virgin Orion Yarn (Combinations: yellow and orange or yellow and #328 New Camel)
Head: Tying Thread
Hackle: Grizzly Neck, Dry Quality
Tail: Deer Body Hair
Wing: Deer Body Hair Tips
Underbody: Deer Body Hair
INSTRUCTIONS:
  1. Hone point; flatten barb. Trim thick, 3 x body length clump of deer hair; remove fuzz, tamp tips even. Tie atop shank, tips extending twice body length beyond bend. Tie 2 strands Orion yarn (one of combinations specified) along shank. Secure at bend. Advance thread to head space.

  2. Tie hackle feather in concave side down, tip extending beyond eye. Separate deer hairs, leaving 1/4 for tail. Stretch remainder forward atop shank; secure hair underbody behind head space. Wrap parallel (not twisted) Orion strands forward to form "ribbed body; tie off at wing root. Trim excess.

  3. Lift hair tips and apply sufficient wraps at base to maintain vertical wing posture.

  4. Spin hackle fully and equally behind and in front of wing: tie off, clip excess. Form a small head, whip finish, cement.
