Fly Tying Instructions: Mini/Max

TYPE: Dry Fly
SIMULATES: Adult Mayfly
HABITAT: Freshwater Lakes, Ponds & Streams
DESIGNED TO TAKE: Trout
BACKGROUND: "Mini/Max," says Ed Berg, a master fly tier living in San Pedro, Calif., "stands for 'minimum materials, maximum performance'." Tie this fly in both natural and general attractor colors.
MATERIALS:
Hook: Size 10 - 24 Mustad 94840 or Daiichi 1190
Thread: Size 8/0, Color to Match Body
Body: Superfine Dubbing
Head: Tying Thread
Hackle: Saddle or Neck to Match Body
Tail: Microfibetts
Wing: Z-lon, White, Posted Type
INSTRUCTIONS:
  1. Start 1/4 shank length behind eye; wrap to bend. Tie in 3 Microfibetts, tips even; wrap down to bend.

  2. Lightly dub thread. Sandwich center tail fiber between length of thread looped under hook bend. Pull loop upward to separate tails to desired angle. Bind loop down with dubbed thread.

  3. Dub thinnest possible abdomen. Trim off Microfibett butts.

  4. Select 2 inch length Z-lon one-half thickness of finished post. Loop under shank, 1/4 shank behind hook eye. Pull both ends vertical. Wrap down under shank, then up behind post and down.

  5. Wrap thread forward under shank and up, once around post. Wrap down under shank, then up behind post and down.

  6. Tie in hackle at post/shank intersection, convex side horizontal, tip extending past eye.

  7. Dub thicker than abdomen thorax equally around post.

  8. Spin hackle around post 3 times, each turn lower than preceding turn; tie off, clip excess. Dub to eye. Use half hitch tool to finish head. Clip thread. Cement head and hackle/post junction with thinned cement.

  9. Trim post to mayfly wing profile.
