Fly Tying Instructions: Thunder Bug

TYPE: Nymph
SIMULATES: Mayfly or Stonefly Nymph
HABITAT: Freshwater
DESIGNED TO TAKE: Trout
BACKGROUND: According to Ray Champlain of Ray's Tackle Shop & Guide Service in West Yellowstone, Mont., this pattern may have been originated by fishing guide and nymph fisherman Sel Jones. Very productive all year round in local waters.
MATERIALS:
Hook: Sizes 6-12 Mustad #9671 TDE Bronzed
Thread: Size 6/0 Black Prewaxed
Weighting: .025 or .031 Diameter Lead Wire
Tail: Guinea Fowl Hackle Barbs
Abdomen: Olive Wool Yarn or Dubbed Tan Fur
Wingcase: Natural Raffia
Thorax: Peacock Herl
Wings: Guinea Fowl Hackle Feather Section
Head: Tying Thread
INSTRUCTIONS:
  1. Hone point , flatten barb. Leave head space. Wrap to bend. Apply lead wraps; secure. At bend, tie in a few guinea fowl hackle barbs for tail. Form a tapered yarn or dubbed abdomen, thicker toward thorax.

  2. Next to raffia, tie in by tips 2 or 3 peacock herl. Trim quill section from guinea fowl hackle; leave 4 to 5 barbs each side and short lengths of quill extending both ends. Tie section atop thorax; trim barb tips symmetrically to form short spent wings. Advance thread to head space.

  3. Wrap peacock herls forward; tie off, trim excess. DO NOT wrap down wings. Re-wet raffia and flatten. Bring raffia forward atop thorax; secure at head space. Clip excess. Form tapered head, whip finish, cement.

  4. Select hackle feather. Trim off barbs closest to butt. Tie in at wing base; trim excess butt. Spin hackle 2 turns forward, 2 turns behind wing; tie off, trim excess tip. Form large head. Whip finish, clip thread. Lacquer.
